Built in 1890, as the engraving on the facade of the small adjacent church of Santa Rita also states, Villino Tortorelli represents one of the oldest historic buildings in the city center.
With no parking worries, our residence allows you to be close to the heart of the oldest part of town – the Sassi district, while at the same time being within the modern center, on the flat part of town, just 900 meters from the main square – Piazza Vittorio Veneto.
Taking its name from the Tortorelli family, in the 18th century Villino Tortorelli was a country villa on the edge of town. Matera’s population was spread out between the Sassi districts and the historic center on the flat part of town (from Via delle Beccherie to Via San Biagio).
The original country villa had been enlarged to become a permanent residence in the early 1900s. During his summer holidays, the current owner’s grandfather used to visit his uncles who lived there year round, enjoying the large garden where the tall oak tree still stands, as lush as ever.
In 2018 on the initiative of Luca, the family’s heir and current owner of the property, renovations on the exterior and interior gave a fresh look to the place, giving those who want to enjoy its charm and strategic position the opportunity to experience Matera in a unique and convenient way. Upon request, guests may visit the small adjacent church which celebrates the Patron Saint of Impossible Causes every 22nd of May.
