Matera enjoys many corners from which to admire the suggestive panorama of the Sassi and the Murgia Park, discover all the unmissable viewpoints of the city: not only the best known and easiest to reach, but also the most hidden and less crowded ones. Photography lovers can indulge themselves by taking photos of the Sassi from all angles!
1. The viewpoint of Piazza Pascoli: it is a few steps from “La Goccia”, the sculpture by Kengiro Azuma, overlooking the Sasso Caveoso, where the houses are almost completely excavated in the rock and mostly intact compared to the past. From here you can also admire the Church of the “Madonna dell’Idris” on the large limestone cliff that stands in the middle of the Sasso Caveoso.
2. The “Belvedere Luigi Guerricchio”: in the central Piazza Vittorio Veneto, right above the Palombaro hypogea, to the right of the small church of Materdomini, commissioned by the knights of Malta. In front of you stands the Cathedral overlooking the Civita, the central nucleus of the Sassi.
3. From Piazza Duomo, in front of the Cathedral of Matera, you can admire almost entirely the Sasso Barisano which owes its name to the Roman consul Barisanus, but in the common tradition it is so called because it faces the nearby Puglia and therefore on the road that led to Bari.
4. Going along via San Biagio to via Santa Cesarea, you will find steps on the right that will take you to a small open space. You will find yourself right behind the Church of San Pietro Barisano and you can admire its bell tower up close.
5. The “Belvedere of Murgia Timone” certainly enjoys one of the most fascinating viewpoints in the city. You can reach it by car or by bus: by car, you have to exit Matera and follow the signs for Taranto / Laterza until Km 583 of the SS7; by urban bus departing from Piazza Matteotti from 11 to 17 every hour.
6. The viewpoint of the Church of Sant’Agostino which is accessed from Via D’Addozio. This corner offers a beautiful perspective from which to photograph the Sassi.
